JULES & STATOYA: HOW TO PLAN FOR AND SUCCEED IN 2019

JULES & STATOYA: HOW TO PLAN FOR AND SUCCEED IN 2019

This week it’s just the two of us, talking about our own process of reflecting on the past year, and planning for the year ahead. We walk you through step by step of how we both look back with gratefulness and learning, and look forward with excitement and anticipation. We also give a few exercises we do to keep ourselves focused, purposeful, and intentional. Here’s to a great year ahead!!

PROCESS WE USED THIS YEAR FOR REFLECTION & PLANNING

#1 – 2018 REFLECTION
  • Overall Successes of 2018
    • What worked well / What are you celebrating?
    • What didn’t work / What frustrated you?
#2 – BRAINDUMP

Once you feel like you have a good handle on how your past year was, you are ready to tackle a brainstorm session for everything on your mind for 2019. In your notebook, just start jotting things down. Simply write out everything you’re thinking you want the new year to encompass and everything that’s a current stressor.

Write things like:

  • Side projects you’re thinking of working on (new offerings, collaborations…etc.)
  • Things keeping you up at night
  • Things you want to do more of
  • Relationships you want to build
  • Financial goals you’re thinking of
  • Words/feelings/habits to focus on
  • Processes to refine

Ok, now… write down every specific To Do that is in your head.

  • When everything is in your head that you need or want to do or accomplish in your business, it often is overwhelming. Once it’s out of your mind, it becomes less of a stress point.
    • Write down things like – a new hire, someone you need to fire, schedule weekly meetings, paint kids corner, new software needed, develop an internship, build partnerships in the community, plan an event, invest in a mentor, get new website, etc.
#3 – ORGANIZE YOUR PLAN & WRITE OUT 2019 GOALS
  • Based on the brain dump and your To Do list (#2), now is when you begin prioritizing.
  • One way to prioritize them is using Brian Tracy’s method:
    • Go through your list, give every task a letter from A to E, A being the highest priority.
    • For every task that has an A, give it a number which dictates the order you’ll do it in.
    • Repeat until all tasks have letters and numbers.
  • Now, choose the 3 big things you’ll tackle in January, 3 in February, 3 in March, and so on.
  • Now, get more specific on exactly how you are going to accomplish those things.
#4 – DECIDE ON YOUR 3 WORDS FOR THE YEAR
  • Now, based on all the work you’ve done above, what are the 3 words that you always need to keep in front of you this year?
    • Could be words like – discipline, growth, action, say “yes” (or say “no”), focus, invest, collaboration, etc.

JULIANNE TAYLOR: A Year Of Saying Yes, Pivoting With The Times, And Embracing The Bold And The Colorful

JULIANNE TAYLOR: A Year Of Saying Yes, Pivoting With The Times, And Embracing The Bold And The Colorful

Our guest today is the one and only, Julianne Taylor. Julianne has an undergrad degree in Interior Design, and a Master’s degree in Human Resources. After holding a leadership position in corporate HR, she travelled with her husband to multiple countries and found herself helping friends design their homes. The more she was referred to others, the entrepreneur in Julianne realized there might just be a business brewing up in all of this. As a result, Julianne has built two very successful businesses from the group up, Taylor Burke Home and Julianne Taylor Style. She is a leader in the interior design industry, and her style, much like her contagious personality, is bold and colorful. One of the many things we love about Julianne is that she uses her platform of influence and years of experience to connect specifically women entrepreneurs and breathe life into their ideas through her consulting practice. This passion for connecting others is evident in her brilliant book, DesignHer, a beautiful collection of stories highlighting female entrepreneurs shaping today’s home décor industry. We loved our time with this powerhouse leader and hope you enjoy this episode!

DOAR BROS.: Serving Classy Cocktails & Quality Fare, Finding A Place To Call Home, And Doing Business With Family

DOAR BROS.: Serving Classy Cocktails & Quality Fare, Finding A Place To Call Home, And Doing Business With Family

You’d have a hard time finding nicer people than Jonathan “JD” Doar, Peyre Lumpkin, and Megan Deschaine. This power trio is, simply put, the real deal. Experienced as they come in the Charleston restaurant and hospitality scene and talented as the day is long, together they make up the management team of the newly opened Doar Bros. cocktail bar. The dream of Doar Bros. started about a year and a half ago as JD and his brother Adam joined forces to begin making their dream a reality. They brought in JD’s then fiancé, now wife, Marinela, to breathe life to the impeccable interior design. They then rounded out the power leadership team with Peyre as General Manager and Megan as Bar Manager. This fantastic establishment boasts “fine spirits,” “modern cocktails,” and “quality fare.” And we see it a little like the “Cheers” of classy cocktail bars, where everybody knows your name. In this episode, we get to sit down with all three of these rock stars and hear what it was like to open a dream. If you enjoy this episode even half as much as we did, you’ve just made a real good choice by hitting play.

SARAH McNAIR: Keeping The Medium Pace, Growing In New Places, And Giving Your Team The Right Tools

SARAH McNAIR: Keeping The Medium Pace, Growing In New Places, And Giving Your Team The Right Tools

The first time we met Sarah McNair and heard her story, there was an instant connection and we knew we wanted to share her and her journey with our GSD Entrepreneur community. Sarah started out as a psychology major, then travelled to Florence, Italy to study culinary, then become a paralegal, to finally end up buying and owning two Pure Barre studios in Charleston – one in West Ashley and one downtown. Her path to becoming a business owner was most definitely not without its challenges, but she manifested grit and determination and visualization in spades to get the deal closed. In this conversation, you’ll hear some of the challenges and joys Sarah has experienced in growing and having a business that allows her to invest in the healing of others bodies and souls.
