Life With A View

Life With A View

Picture

I find myself getting lost in thought pretty often.

Don’t be fooled – I’m not solving the world’s problems or anything. I AM however taking mental pictures of the beautiful view in front of me at any given moment. There is so much you can capture with a blink of your eye. The people, the smells, the sounds, the surroundings. All of the elements connecting to the other to make the most creative masterpiece there ever was.

It’s these moments, the moments when I sit back and survey, that makes me feel the most full.

Full of gratitude. Sometimes so full it brings me to tears. When you take a second to embrace stillness & acknowledge the world around you, it’s hard not to feel full of gratitude.

There is also something so powerfully liberating about surrendering and letting the world unfold right before your eyes. Letting things go. Not attaching yourself too much to plans or the way life should or should not be.

At the same time though, I have to remind myself that I’m in control. I played a major part in creating the view that I see right now. Every single choice I’ve made since the moment I was born has led me to this very moment. Writing this blog post in the East Village of Manhattan on an overcast Sunday afternoon.

This is your world. Your view. Make it a beautiful one.

24 To-Do’s That Matter to Genuinely Successful People

24 To-Do’s That Matter to Genuinely Successful People

Picture

Everybody wants the magic pill of success.

I’m guilty of it – download an article, listen to a podcast, read a book that promises only having to work 4 hours a week – and think, ok that can be me. If that guy or girl can do it, I surely can too. And then… same old, same old. I move on to the next article, or book… promising the next great thing.

Then, I sat down, and thought… what really is success to me?? What are the things that when I get to the end of my life, I won’t regret??

It’s loving my people well, every day. It’s being able to lay my head on the pillow at night, knowing I gave all I had in the very best way possible. It’s knowing that the things that are before me to do, I’m going all in. It’s becoming a better, more whole and healthy person every day.

Money, is awesome, don’t get me wrong. I really like it. It eliminates a lot of stress, and affords you the ability to do some cool things. BUT… it’s not the end all, be all, at all. And both money, and power, are scary when they’re not coupled with humility and genuine love for others.

Given all that, I started jotting down things that matter to me, both in business and personally. Your list might be different, but my hope is that this list spurs some good thinking in you as well.

  1. Write a handwritten thank you note after a meeting, or in response to something special.

  2. Begin delegating 2-3 things a week, until you’re doing only the things that only you can do.

  3. Put your phone out of sight when you’re in a face to face conversation with someone.

  4. Know and understand your important business numbers – Knowing your Sales and Revenue numbers is fine and good, but you have to, at any time, be able to pinpoint your Profit Margin. You have to understand what’s coming in and what’s going out in order to understand what you need to invest back in the business and what you get to take home.

  5. Purposefully and thoughtfully encourage 2-3 different people each day.

  6. Take 5 deep, lung-filling breaths at least 3 times a day.

  7. When you’re having a bad day (and you will), try to skip without smiling. Guaranteed you won’t be able to not smile.

  8. If at all possible, when your phone rings, answer it. If you have to send it to voice mail, call them back as soon as possible.

  9. Clear all distractions off your desk. (Clean desk=Clean mind. Cluttered desk=Cluttered mind).

  10. Get out into your community. Grab a sandwich, a cup of coffee, buy local, etc. And when you go, engage with the people in the store!

  11. Respond to emails in less than 24 hours.

  12. Drink at least ½ your body weight in water every day.

  13. Learn 8-10 new people’s names every week.

  14. Lay down on the floor with your dog/cat/k at least once a day and pay special attention to them.

  15. Understand who your ideal customer/client is, and market accordingly.

  16. You know that one thing that keeps hanging over you that you haven’t done? Do it by the end of this week.

  17. Put up serious boundaries with those who enjoy not taking your boundaries seriously.

  18. Sing out loud at least once a day. Whether you can or not, sing out loud. Sing out proud.

  19. Smile when writing your email responses and texts. Makes you kinder with your words.

  20. And, while we’re on the subject of emails, be thoughtful in your email responses. Why just give a short [curt] reply when you can use the opportunity to be kind?

  21. Don’t allow yourself to get hardened by the jerks. They are out there, but so are the good ones. Choose to spend your time with the latter.

  22. Make introductions to people who you think would really benefit from knowing each other.

  23. Fight the urge to be pessimistic. Positive energy makes you much more attractive.

  24. Make sure the important people in your life are your priority. Partner, spouse, family, kids, best friend… let them know how special they are to you, every day.

With all the chaos in the world these days, we could use more intentional goodness. It’s your choice. Let’s make a difference today.

Stuck On Words

Stuck On Words

Picture

Words are extremely powerful for me.

I write them down to clear space for new ones. I write them down to set intentions for my day. I write them down to make them more real. To manifest the story they so beautifully have the ability to create on paper and in my own life.

Sometimes they fall out of my mind fluidly like water, but sometimes (like this morning) I get stuck in the silence & stillness in my head. It can be peaceful at times, BUT when you need to be writing for a purpose, it can be frustrating. Here’s what I do when I get stuck in that place…

I take 30 seconds and write down all the words that come to mind when I think of BEING INSPIRED.

Here’s what came up for me:

Light
Warmth
Connection
Endless
Celebration
Support
Encourage
Adventure
Spontaneous
Generosity
Gratitude
Mindfulness
Meditation
Nature
Yes
And
Lov
Sweat
Strength
Peace
Stillness
Breath

Okay, now your turn! Don’t think about it too hard. Just write whatever comes to mind. 123 GO!

When you feel complete, read your list back to yourself or out loud to someone else. Notice how merely seeing (or hearing) the words can shift the feelings in your mind & heart. Maybe they elicit the feeling of being inspired. Maybe they trigger your mind back into creative motion. OR maybe they stay on the page waiting to be put into your story at a later date. THAT’S OKAY!

The beautiful thing here is that we are all inspired by totally different words, we all have our own creative powers, and we can all put them together in our story exactly how we choose.

Cheers!

Excuses Only Stop Forward Momentum

Excuses Only Stop Forward Momentum

Picture

Many times people have asked me to help them lose weight.

Now you have to know I am not the picture perfect model fitness guru by any stretch of the imagination. You see just a few years back; I was pushing 180 lbs., at 5’5. I am going to stop here for some “quantifying” clarity…I was pushing 180 lbs. of a lot of fat. The only muscle I had was what I needed to go through my normal activities of daily living, and it was tucked far beneath the junk I had been consuming for years. And for all intents and purposes, my idea of exercise was getting up off the couch to go to the refrigerator. It was not until I saw a picture of myself in a bathing suit that I knew something had to change…no more EXCUSES!!

With that said, let’s cover 6 of the most common excuses I’ve heard and how to go about eliminating them from our thinking and vocabulary.

Excuse #1: I can’t do it!

Goal #1: My mom always said, “CAN’T never could do anything until TRY came along”.  So I challenge you to just move, start with a 15-minute walk one time a day, and build up to a 30-minute walk.  Hint: listening to music or a podcast helps pass the time.

Excuse #2: I hate diets! I always break them!

Goal #2: Diets do not have to be something you dread.  Think about it as though you are changing the way you eat. Actually, I like how Haylie Pomroy, the author of The Metabolism Diet, uses the word DIET…”Did I Eat Today”…clever, huh?

Excuse #3: I don’t have time to cook, it is easier to go out or eat on the go!

Goal #3: Plan your menu for every week including breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks. Use a crock pot…it cooks while you sleep!

Excuse #4: I can’t cook!

Goal #4: (See Goal #1)  YOU CAN COOK!  There are plenty of recipes out there that are easy and super healthy, and YUMMY!  You do not have to be a Michelin Star Chef to make a healthy salad with lots of fresh veggies and grilled chicken on top. So grab a recipe and give it a try! Here is a start.

Excuse #5: I don’t know what to buy!

Goal #5: Stay away from processed food…good rule of thumb is to shop around the outer perimeter of the grocery store; avoid the isles (except for things like quinoa and beans). So load up on fresh veggies and fruits, and lean proteins. HINT: don’t to the grocery store hungry.

Excuse #6: I don’t have time!

Goal #6: Honestly, this is B.S.! This is one of the most used excuses I hear, and to be honest, I use it myself. But, we have to ask ourselves…How much time do I spend [waste] looking at Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, or doing SnapChat?  How much time do I watch TV?  How much time do I waste “watching and waiting” on the next email to come in my email so I can be ready to respond immediately? How much time do I spend reading? How much time do I sit daydreaming about having a toner, sexier figure? We all have time; the key is how we choose to spend it.

I could go on and on but you get the point…Excuses only stop forward momentum.

Until you are ready to stop making excuses, the bad news is you will remain where you are.

We are given one body so why not respect it, love it, nurture it, and take care of it? There is nothing stopping you. Nothing except “excuses”.

Let today be your day to lay down your arsenal of excuses and surrender to the exciting path of moving forward.

Team Building Doesn’t Work

Team Building Doesn’t Work

Picture

We’ve had a handful of people reach out to us recently asking us if we do team building activities.

We can quickly and confidently say we don’t do “the trust fall” but after that, it’s always an interesting question to answer, and never really an easy one without first understanding their specific team dynamics. There are so many factors that play into the effectiveness (or ineffectiveness) of a team.

Usually when someone comes needing team building it’s because something is “broken”. The team isn’t working together, and as a result, they aren’t achieving even close to maximum productivity. The people on the team typically don’t look forward to going to work, but merely show up because of the sum of money that regularly gets deposited into their bank account.

Honestly, in my opinion, this is a tragedy.

Most of us spend the greater part of our week at work, with the same people. And, yet far too many dread going to work.

How can this change? How can we create cultures where people are excited about what they do and who they do it with?

Let’s discuss a few of the reasons why a team may not be functioning optimally and explore what can be done to make changes.

Challenge #1 – The team isn’t clear on the vision/purpose of their job and where the organization is headed as a whole. An old proverb says, where there is no vision, the people perish. People have to know why they’re doing what they’re doing and how they’re valuable to accomplishing that purpose.

Solution:  The leadership absolutely needs to get crystal clear on the purpose of the organization, and what their 5-10 core values are. And then communicate them to the team (often). Once they have been communicated, all decisions must stem from those core values.

Challenge #2 – There’s a bad apple (or two) in the bunch. We all know this person. Doesn’t want to pull their weight. Complains when they’re given a task to do. Is arrogant and ego driven. They talk about people and stir up the pot. They’re just not team players.

Solution:  Let them go. If you’ve tried to work with them and “coach” their behavior, yet they aren’t changing, you have to let them go asap. Hire slow and fire quick. If they don’t fit your core values (see Challenge #1), they just aren’t a fit. So have the hard conversation today (or at least this week). You’ll be amazed how the energy in your group will change.

Challenge #3 – The individuals on the team don’t feel a part of the greater whole. We all want to know three things: 1) that we are safe – in an environment where it’s safe to risk, stretch, and grow, 2) that we belong – in an environment where everyone feels like a tight-knit tribe… that they are equal and all rowing in the same direction, and 3) that we matter – in an environment where each contributes individually in a unique way. If these three things aren’t present, people will not thrive.

Solution:  Schedule individual meetings with each person. Validate them and tell them why they are important to the team. Listen to them to really understand their frustrations, challenges, suggestions, and celebrations. If you’re not meeting regularly as a team, begin doing so. Even if it’s a 10 minute weekly “stand up meeting”. The group needs to connect. If the team understands the mission/purpose of what they’re doing and believes in their leader/s, they become very powerful.

Challenge #4 – The leader (or leadership team) isn’t effectively leading. Many leaders we’ve seen do not deserve to hold the title of a “leader”. If a leader is removed, critical, not willing to make the hard decisions, sarcastic, not open to new ideas… you know the type, they either need coaching or to step down. Typically, there are not necessarily “bad teams”, but leaders who just have to improve their leadership abilities.

Solution:  The leader needs coaching. They need to understand how their team sees them and how they are affected by them. If the leader is not willing to change and they “can’t” be replaced, it might be time to start looking for another job. I remember one time saying to my boss’s boss after a long period of frustration and discouragement, “either he goes or I go, but we can’t keep functioning like this”. A week later, my boss announced his resignation and (magically) everything began to improve.

Challenge #5 – The culture is not life-giving. A culture is made up of purpose, values and people – including the leader/s and the individuals on a team. One of the most important factors in a solid, positive culture is communication. A negative culture is often caused by unmet expectations, assumptions, and misunderstandings, which can all be addressed through a commitment to communication.

Solution:  Cultures are created by behaviors. If you don’t actively address, celebrate, and challenge people’s behaviors, your culture will run amuck quickly. Ruthlessly pursue open lines of communication, and encourage people to have (and use) their voice in positive ways.

Overall, it’s our opinion that “games” (traditional team building activities) don’t work unless they are followed up with consistent discussion to allow change to really take place. A day or two of “team building” may be nice in the moment, but is usually a band-aid on a bigger problem. Those activities may work very short-term, but people are smart and they know an activity or two doesn’t change anything for the long-term. New habits of relating, communicating, and working need to be formed.

How’s your team? Remember today as Gandhi says, “Be the change you want to see”.
